Based north of San Jose in the mountains draining towards the Caribbean lies our base, a quaint eco-lodge in the Sarapiqui River valley. Our trip features 6 days of on water adventures including 2 days “Learn to paddle whitewater kayak/canoe” 2 days of surfing lessons at the Caribbean Coast, and a 2 day overnight “Jungle” whitewater rafting adventure on the spectacular and challenging Pacuare River.
Our journey starts in San Jose where you will be met at the airport by your Esprit guides. From there it’s a 2 hour drive to our lodge where our adventures begin. While learning to paddle we enjoy clean, warm, challenging whitewater .
We then head to the Caribbean coast to try our hand at surfing. The coastline has an amazing array of locations suitable for learning. While at the coast we visit the Jaguar Animal Rehabilitation Centre where abandoned and injured animals are treated and rehabilitated to eventually (hopefully) be released into the wild. Here we will come into close contact with Sloths (everybody loves sloths), 3 different species of monkeys, anteaters, white nosed coati and a variety of bird life.
From the coast its off to the Pacuare River. Famous for its challenging rapids and lush jungle scenery the Pacuare dishes up some of the best adventure in Costa Rica. Our overnight “Jungle Camp” experience is one of the highlights of the week as we stay in river view cabañas and soak in the jungle vibe overnighting deep in the heart of virgin rainforest. Our second day on the river features the most challenging rapids including the Dos Montañas Canyon. The river abound with wildlife such as howler monkeys, three toed sloth, iguanas, the world’s most abundant and unique varieties of frogs, as well as tropical plants and birdlife (including Toucans) too numerous to count.
We try to include a series of “off the river” activities to compliment our day of adventure. These activities include a wildlife spotting boat safari, rainforest hikes to beautiful waterfalls, its even possible to take an early morning stroll through the rainforest right out the front door of the lodge. Optional activities (at an additional cost) can be arranged including horseback riding, chocolate tour, serpentarium and zipline/canopy tours. If you are looking for an exotic, exciting, and adventurous “liquid” holiday well off the beaten track we hope you join us this season in Costa Rica!
